A visual example
Why the weight changes the average
A value with weight 3 contributes three times as much as a value with weight 1.
Keep values and weights together Value Weight Product 4 1 4 6 3 18 Total 4 22 Keep values and weights together
The values are 4 and 6. For the weighted calculation, enter weights 1 and 3.
Divide by the total weight
The weighted mean is 22 ÷ 4 = 5.5. Giving both values equal weight would instead produce 5.
Divide the weighted sum by the sum of the weights, not by the number of rows.
Illustrative example. These are sample numbers, not a prescribed grading scale. In grade mode, enter the scale and weights that actually apply to your course.
How to use it
- Choose simple, weighted or grade mode.
- Enter rows or import a list with explicit decimal and list separators.
- Review imported values before applying them. Valid table entries update the result automatically; export the current table if needed.
2, 4 and 6 have mean 4 and sum 12. Values 4 and 6 weighted 1 and 2 give 16/3.
Details & limits
Select decimal and list separators explicitly. Nonnegative weights with a positive total; no universal GPA interpretation.
What if the required next grade exceeds my scale?
The required mathematical value is displayed as outside your chosen scale. It is not silently clamped. The grade mode does not apply institution-specific GPA, rounding or promotion rules.
