A visual example
An overnight shift, calculated clearly
The next day and the break both matter. Decimal hours are a different way of writing the final duration.
Specify the following day Event Time Start 22:00 · day 1 End 06:00 · day 2 Duration 8 h Specify the following day
For a shift across midnight, explicitly set the end to the following day.
Subtract the actual break
Eight hours on the clock minus a 30-minute break leaves seven hours and thirty minutes of work.
- Two useful readings
7 h 30 min = 7.50 h
Target: 8 h
Difference: −30 min
Read the result correctly
Thirty minutes is half an hour. Compared with an eight-hour target, the difference is minus thirty minutes.
7 h 30 min is 7.50 decimal hours, not 7.30.
Illustrative example. This is clock-time arithmetic. Time-zone changes, daylight-saving changes and employment-law assessments are not included. Do not subtract gaps between separate work blocks a second time.
How to use it
- For a quick day calculation, enter your start, end and break. A date is optional.
- Select break duration or break intervals; mark the next day explicitly for overnight work.
- Read the automatically updated net time. Targets and dates are optional; choose Week for a seven-day overview. Export the current day or week if needed.
08:00–17:00 minus 60 minutes gives 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours. 08:30 hours means 8.50 decimal hours.
Details & limits
Clock-time differences in whole minutes; not timezone elapsed time or a legal working-time assessment.
Does this apply employment law or daylight-saving rules?
No. It subtracts entered clock times in exact minutes. It neither applies legal break rules nor models timezone changes. Enter unpaid breaks once; gaps between separate work blocks are already excluded.
